UBERman is a series of portraits of platform-based delivery workers, photographed during brief encounters at the threshold of my home.
The doorstep is a point of contact between private space and the movement of people and services through the city. What is usually a brief exchange becomes the setting for a portrait. The location recurs, while each person brings a different gaze, posture and gesture to the image.
I wanted each portrait to begin with a real encounter, however brief. Seeing another person also brings a sense of responsibility towards them. Through the camera, I wanted to give each person a place in our shared field of attention, acknowledging a presence that matters. Their work is woven into the fabric of the city, yet the people who do it so often remain unseen.
The portraits begin with a shift of attention: from the delivery to the person bringing it.
